Robert Vavra, 1977
A hippophile "since forever, beyond memory," Vavra’s passion grew even stronger upon the sight of an Andalusian standing amidst a field of red poppies in Spain, resulting in his first horse portrait. This photobook, which led Vavra to produce a documentary on horses, comprises more than a hundred images of a variety of breeds including Arabians, Thoroughbreds, Quarter Horses, and Lippizaners, alongside quotations on the majesty of horses by Virgil, D.H. Lawrence, Shakespeare, Garcia Lorca, Rabelais, and other literary figures throughout. Vividly illustrated with color plates; with an introduction by novelist James Michener ("No cameraman has recorded the horse with such excitement and personal style as has Robert Vavra," notes and commentary on the behavior of horses.
